    Synopsis

In The Hours, Michael Cunningham, widely praised as one of the most gifted writers of his generation, draws inventively on the life and work of Virginia Woolf to tell the story of a group of contemporary characters struggling with the conflicting claims of love and inheritance, hope and despair. The narrative of Woolf's last days before her suicide early in World War II counterpoints the fictional stories of Richard, a famous poet whose life has been shadowed by his talented and troubled mother, and his lifelong friend Clarissa, who strives to forge a balanced and rewarding life in spite of the demands of friends, lovers, and family.

    Time Out - David Bahr

For those familiar with Woolf's life, The Hours...offers a well-researched and credible facsimile of the British writer and her world.

Not worthy of a Pulitzerby Venus76

October 18, 2009: The author's writing style is simple and easy to read which is the only positive thing I can say. I appreciated the writing style but could not grow to care for the characters. I usually enjoy gloomy storylines because a depressive mood is real to most people. I don't expect a happy ending or a moral lesson in every book I read. However, the author did not do a good job in getting the reader to care for the characters. This was a story that had potential but did not deliver.

August 17, 2009: This was just a wonderful book to read and I can definetely see why it won the Pulitzer! The style is superb, and I really got lost in the language and imagery! I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a great read and a new story.
