    Synopsis

An inspiring and absorbing account of the struggle for human dignity and racial equality (Coretta Scott King)

    Annotation

Rural McIntosh County, Georgia, in the 1970s was bypassed by the civil rights movement, until one unemployed, uneducated black man changed life in McIntosh County forever. As evocative of the South as Faulkner and as compulsively readable as well-crafted fiction, Greene's multi-award-winning memoir will captivate everyone who believes that the fight for equality is worth waging.

July 23, 2002: I had to read this book for HI300 summer reading, so of course I went into it thinking it was going to be awful. I had no idea what the book was about either. Once I got into it I realized it was about McIntosh County, Georgia which is right near Savannah, Georgia (it's mentioned in the book a lot, too) which is where I live! The descriptions of the town are hilarious to me because each and every one of them was true back in the day and still is true now. Great book!
