Luis (romance languages, SUNY at Binghamton) analyzes the continuing prevalence of antislavery literature in Cuba a century after emancipation. He draws on Foucault's theory of counter-discourse to suggest that the literature provides a forum for protesting the marginal status of blacks in contemporary society, and for challenging the dominant culture's view of history and literature.
