Knitting is hot, with 4 million newcomers in the last few years joining a core group of 38,000,000 knitters nationwide. And these are primarily young, creative, connected chicks with sticks who are coming together in living rooms, knitting cafes, and chic yarn stores, and making everything from funky hats to bikinis.
In Stitch 'n Bitch, Debbie Stoller-founder of the first Stitch 'n Bitch knitting group in New York City-covers every aspect of knitting and the knitting-together lifestyle: the how-to, the when-to, the what-to, the why-to. Writing with wit and attitude (The Knitty-Gritty, Blocking for Blockheads), she explains the different types of needles and yarns (and sheep, too) and all the techniques from basic to fancy, knit to purl to cast-off. She also shares her special brand of corrective surgery for when things go wrong, and offers fun and informative sidebars on such topics as how to find the best yarn for less, how to make a buttonhole, knitting etiquette, and what tools to keep in your knitting bag. At the heart of the book are forty stylish patterns: Alien Scarf, Big Bad Baby Blanky, Mohair Hoodie, Kitty and Devil Hat, Cell Phone Cozy, and Wonder Woman Bikini. And for anyone interested: how to start a Stitch 'n Bitch group.
Once thought to be a hobby for grandmothers, knitting has become for today's twentysomethings what macram was to that same age group in the 1970s. In this nifty guide, Stoller introduces that age-old craft in-depth, making use of the modern products and patterns that have come about as a result of its resurgence. An introduction chronicles the history of knitting from the female perspective, while subsequent chapters cover topics such as yarn type, instruments, stitches, and patterns. Perhaps the most exciting bit is Stoller's "knit as you learn" technique: with every new stitch, she presents a new pattern, thereby allowing knitters to build on their knowledge. Another enticing part of this project, the decidedly hip patterns (collected from women around the world) range from a string bikini to beanie hats; all include easy-to-follow directions and illustrations. Essential for all crafts collections and perfect for a display, given the growing interest in knitting. October 26, 2009: Finally found a book with instructions I get! Illustrations are extremely helpful. I carry this book around with me and refer to it all the time. Have bought 2 copies for gifts for both experienced and novice knitters. Also like the patterns, have used many of them.

October 17, 2009: This is the knitting instruction book I always get for new knitters in their teens, twenties, and early thirties. I also use it for reference and illustration when I am teaching beginning knitting. It is written in a cheeky, irreverent style that catches and holds the attention of young knitters. The illustrations are very clear as are the written instructions. The scope of the book is basic, so it would not be the only book you would want for your knitting library.
