July 17, 2007: I picked this one up in a used bookstore because the cover art was pretty. I thought 'Oh, this is going to be another one of those roguish-character-forced-into-a-hero-position books'. And yeah, that's more or less what it is. But Reichert does it so freaking WELL! Nightfall, master of disguise, accomplishes his 'legendary' feats in 'mostly' non-magical ways that left me impressed instead of groaning. He's witty without going overboard, and he's not TOO perfect. Yes, Prince Edward is idealistic and annoying, but he's just so dumb and kind-hearted that I couldn't help but like him. Reichert has a real talent for characterization. I really did like all the 'good guys', and the 'bad guys' were well-written enough to hold my attention. Reichert draws you in and makes you interested in everyone and everything. This immediately went to the top of my list of books that all fantasy enthusiasts must own. I found it an excellent read.
