Troubled nurse's aide Taylor Thomas is force-fed scraps of stale wisdom by one of her elderly clients in Wil A. Emerson's well-intentioned but hopelessly clumsy Taking Rosie's Arm. Despite a life of poverty and neglect, Taylor was one of the smartest students in her high school. Ten years later, she's still trying to outrun her past and better herself, deriving inspiration from no-nonsense diabetic Rosie MacIntosh: "I soon learned that almost every day she had a special message for me." Such banality is typical of this substandard endeavor, which shows little and tells too much. Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.

April 17, 2002: Taking Rosie's Arm is among the top 5 books I've read within the last year. I found Taylor to be an enchanting protagonist - her character was revealed in both positive and negative aspects, so she seemed like a real person to me. The way that Rosie gently guided Taylor towards recognizing and realizing her potential was both humourous and heartwarming. Wil A. Emerson tells a tale somewhat in the manner of Elizabeth Berg. You feel like you know the characters, care what happens to them, and eagerly await the outcomes of their stories. This one's a keeper for sure.

April 11, 2002: What a wonderfully sweet story! I became so engrossed in the lives of the women in the book, I couldn't put it down once I started reading. Rosie is someone that every one needs in their life-she sets you on the path that needs to be taken for a fulfilled life. I wish Oprah would read this book and introduce it to the public on her show.
