Synopsis

One of the master stylists of American literature, Gore Vidal now provides us with his uniquely irreverent take on America’s founding fathers, bringing them to life at key moments of decision in the birthing of our nation.
“Pure Vidal. . . . Inventing a Nation is his edgy tribute to the way we were before the fall.”—Los Angeles Times Book Review
“[Vidal offers] details that enliven and . . . reflections on the past that point sharply to today.” —Richard Eder, New York Times
“An engaging [and] . . . unblinking view of our national heroes by one who cherishes them, warts and all.”—Edmund S. Morgan, New York Review of Books
“[Vidal’s] quick wit flickers over the canonical tale of our republic’s founding, turning it into a dark and deliciously nuanced comedy of men, manners, and ideas.”—Amanda Heller, Boston Sunday Globe
“This entertaining and enlightening reappraisal of the Founders is a must for buffs of American civilization and its discontents.”—Booklist
“Gore Vidal . . . still understands American history backwards and forwards as few writers ever have.”—David Kipen, National Public Radio

The New York Times

It is hard to know what to make of Vidal, America's super-satirist. Can he be serious? Yes, sometimes. Probably no American writer since Franklin has derided, ridiculed and mocked Americans more skillfully and more often than Vidal. In this latest effort, which is not one of his lively novels about moments in America's past but his attempt to explain where these great founders came from, Vidal has his usual sardonic fun with the creation of the nation, interspersing his history with some witty remarks about our present dreadful circumstances. — Gordon S. Wood

Biography

Unafraid to point fingers and assassinate characters, Gore Vidal has always been provocative, if not universally liked. A prolific essayist and acclaimed author of historical novels such as 1984's Lincoln, his talent for positioning history within a modern context is one thing about Vidal that remains undisputed.

March 06, 2007: I'd read the reviews but bought the book anyway, because it was on sale and I'm an avid reader of American history, especially the Revolutionary Era. I should have listened to the reviews. Vidal doesn't like George Bush. We get it. Anyone who's likely to voluntarily read about the topic probably is intelligent enough not to have the point repeated seemingly in every other paragraph for the message to get across. I'd hoped to read about very human people that played a role in our nation's founding. Instead, I got thinly-veiled, early 21st century populist dogma ('Bush is bad, black & white issue.'). I couldn't agree more with the reviewer regarding the conversation with JFK -- were we to be impressed by that?
