December 28, 2007: Definately a very comprehensive guide book with a lot of very good travel tips for exploring the island of Maui. However, 'buyer beware', use your own jusdgement when selecting what sites to see and which ones to skip. All of the scenery is very beautiful....no need to take HUGE risks as this guide leads on. We went to visit Blue Pools and due to poor judgment on on our own part, almost got pummeled by a VERY large, VERY angry Hawaiian native. No joke, he almost punched my husband, blocked our car in and berated us for 20 minutes. I was so happy to get out of there, I really thought he was going to kill us!! Unfortunately this guide leads you to beleive it's no big deal and 'they've never had a problem'. I am sure there are other travlers out there who have had a similar frightening encoutner. It is wrong of these guides to point you to place that is forbidden, the Angry guy even tells us that ever since that horrible book came out, tons of people trespass on his land. It was even written up in the New York Times in Sept. 07'.....he showed us his picture on the front cover!!

August 07, 2007: I have been to Maui 3 times with this book. It is one of the best guidebooks I have ever bought, and I've bought a bunch. It's fun to read, full of beautiful color photos, and well-organized. Our family had an easy time finding information on anything we needed, whether it was a snorkel spot in south Maui or a good family restaurant in Kihei. The descriptions and photos of the beaches are especially good. I didn't agree with all the restaurant recommendations--hated Cheeseburger in Paradise, thought Stella Blues was great--and some of the activity companies the author was lukewarm about I thought were excellent. The big problem I have with this book is that in its attempt to 'reveal' Maui, it recommends going to places that are not well served by roads and trails. We went to most of these places, and in many cases it wasn't worth it. Maui is so wonderful that you don't really need to go off the beaten path to have a spectacular experience. In other words, you can swim under a waterfall, enjoy the world's best snorkeling, and lounge in freshwater pools without ignoring dozens of 'No Trespassing' signs, trekking a mile over rough lava, or scampering 500 feet down slippery wet rocks. Save your precious vacation time and the health of the island, and skip 'The Blue Pool,' 'Fishbowl,' and 'The Olivine Pools.' Maui is not just a giant playground, much of it is wilderness and deserves to be respected as such.
