      Synopsis

Hundreds of books have been written about the beauty of aboveground Wisconsin, yet few have revealed much about the natural wonders of the state's underground attractions. This book is a guide for modern-day adventurers who want to knoww more about what lies beneath the surface. Doris Green has provided a wonderful treasure map to nearly 50 of the state's caves, mines, tunnels, and underground oddities, as well as 7 in nearby states.

      You'll find:

      • Details about and directions to more than 20 accessible caves, including some intriguing sites in northeastern Iowa.
      • Descriptions of lead and zinc mines in Wisconsin and northern Illinois, and copper and iron mines in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
      • A guide to railroad tunnels and other underground spaces that were created for specific purposes, including beer and wine storage, human escape toures, and lead shot production.
      • Information that will give you a basic understanding of and deeper appreciation for the history and geology of Wisconsin's caves, mines, and tunnels.

      Biography

Born in Racine, Doris Greem has lived nearly all her life in Wisconsin. Attracted by the rolling landscape of the Driftless Region, she and her husband, Micheal Knight, settled into a log house southwest of Spring Green in 1994. Green writes and edits a variety of publications. But writing about Wisconsin, she says, is a matter of love not work. Green holds a masters degree in journalism and mass communications from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
