Right Angles and Other Obstinate Truths is a fascinating collection of commentaries on current issues, famous and infamous individuals, passing fads, Baby Boomer memories and personal experiences. The more than 70 short essays by Michael M. Bates are provocative and may strike some as controversial. They all appeared in his regular column in the southwest suburban Chicago Reporter Newspapers. There aren't many books that run the gamut from Adams (John) to Zorro. This one does, and includes observations on topics as disparate as the IRS, Banned Books Week, pet psychics, the Chicago Cubs, Wal-Mart and eternity. You may find the author's views extreme, repugnant, wildly illogical, disgracefully partisan, inconsistent or narrow minded. They are never boring.

July 26, 2004: After reading Mr Bates' column in the newspaper for years I was pleased that he had written a book. You have to admire a gut who claims to be a 90's kind of guy..1790's that is. The author expresses his views and challenges the reader to think instead on being hit over the head with idealogy. He dares to venture where few have the courage to go that on matters such as bringing you daughter to work and political correctness overload. Also included are personal stories one which deals of the loss of dear friend which is handled with tenderness as well loving humor. The author writes of having a dog for many years and the joy of having him as well as the sadness of loss. It will bring to memory for every parent a smile when he discusses taking his daughter prom dress shopping .As a boomer the chapters on Zorro and Bishop Sheen on television recalls the days of television when all hours were the family hours. These chapters of the book will be of interest to children of boomers. and will give them an insite into their parents and sad to say at my age Grandparents. Put on the coffee and put out the coffee cake and curl up with this gem of a book.
