Kishiro's excellent nine-volume "Battle Angel Alita" manga series, published in the United States from 1992 to 1998, exemplifies many elements of the appeal that sf manga and anime holds for American fans, with its intense action and combat, detailed renderings of inventive super-technology, unpredictable story line, surprisingly deep philosophical bent, and cute heroine. Now, Kishiro has jettisoned the series' original, hastily created ending and begun this sequel series to take its place, continuing cyborg warrior Alita's odyssey of self-discovery. After being killed by the mad scientist Desty Nova, Alita awakens, fully restored by Nova, in the floating city of Tiphares. Tiphares has always been viewed as a paradise by the dwellers in the Scrapyard on the surface below, where Alita spent much of her life. But there are terrible secrets behind Tiphares, and Nova's broadcast of one of them brings chaos, destruction, and death to the floating city. Kishiro's art is as fluid and impressive as ever. Given its explicit violence, the series is rated "T+: for older teens" by Viz.
