(Hardcover - First American Edition)
The most up-to-date, comprehensive, and practical guide to the art of good photography, this book teaches every skill a photographer needs to take great pictures, from the most basic to the most advanced. Authoritative and easy-to-understand, John Hedgecoe's New Manual of Photography features practical advice on every element of the photographic process, from how to choose the right equipment and specialist techniques to inspirational guidance on the art of creative composition.
Author Biography: Internationally acclaimed photographer John Hedgecoe has shared his methods with millions of readers since his classic, The Book of Photography, was first published in 1976. In addition to his distinguished career as a teacher, his photographs have appeared in countless newspapers and magazines around the world. He published John Hedgecoe's New Book of Photography with DK in 1994.
This fine book provides a thorough, up-to-the-moment overview of virtually all aspects of photography. The author of numerous manuals (e.g., The Photographer's Handbook), Hedgecoe begins by defining the camera itself and offering excellent advice on selecting equipment. He then discusses the key elements of photography, including lenses and films, along with the basic techniques of focusing, shutter speeds, and depth of field. He provides helpful suggestions regarding the essence of good photography-light and composition-and devotes a separate chapter to color photography. He concludes by covering the most popular kinds of photographs, including portraiture, landscapes, nature, and sports. Separate chapters describe setting up a studio and working in specialized photography, such as underwater photography and astrophotography. Hedgecoe also deals with the elements of post-production for both the traditional darkroom and digital photography. The text is clear and accessible, every page is generously illustrated, and a substantial glossary and useful index are included. One of the very best comprehensive guides available, this work belongs in all core photography collections in public and academic libraries.-Raymond Bial, First Light Photography, Urbana, IL Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.

May 04, 2004: Book is old, yes, it?s old. Photos are shot no later then early 80?s. Besides they are 20-30 years old, almost all photos are shot with low speed Agfa slide film. It?s not fair, is it? I mean how many of you (us) shoot with slide films? Book tells about everything but too little information on each topic, one page fro each topic. Dedicating only two pages (out of 420) to exposure is not what good photography book gives you, does it? Whatever is given, is given from technical point of view, not an artistic approach. Book can be useful for someone who?s making first steps in photography. Book is for basic knowledge, ABC?s or even DEF?s of photography. I was looking something like PQR?s ? wrong pick. I have to admit there are one or two nifty tricks explained, but that?s it. If you?re advanced amateur (no talk about pros) forget about this book. If you?re beginner pick it and after squeezing all juices of it, give it to someone else, like I gave it to my wife. Good luck!
