      Annotation

When none of Little Roo's friends hears the noisy monster that is following her, she learns that eating properly is the only way to get rid of it.

      Children's Literature

Anxious to go outside and play, Little Roo decides to skip her breakfast of kangaflakes and toast-with-honey in favor of heading out to the backyard. When she starts bouncing her new ball, she hears a great, big grumble-rumble. Frightened by the loud noise, she bounces off to tell her friend Crocodile about it. However, Crocodile is too busy eating her grapes to care about the alleged monster that is following Little Roo, so the kangaroo decides to visit another friend. Throughout her journey she encounters various animals, including a snake, an elephant, a lion and a monkey—all of whom ignore her because they are too busy eating their own breakfast snacks. After not getting anyone's attention and hearing the loudest growl of all, Little Roo quickly bounces home, where she explains the situation to her mother, who gently tells her that the noise is simply her empty, growling stomach. Toddlers will enjoy this charming picture book, which contains repetitive text, eye-catching artwork and sturdy pages for little fingers. In fact, it's a great resource for teaching young children about the importance of eating breakfast and starting their day off on the right foot. 2000, Dorling Kindersley, $5.95. Ages 2 to 5.
