This is the first biography of More to have absorbed the small revolution in Reformation scholarship of the last 20 years...and is able to see England, through the mists of Protestant and Whig propaganda, as one of the most authentically Cahtolic countries in the history of Europe. -- The New York Times Book Review

October 15, 2009: Anne of Green Gables is a novel by Lucy Maud Montgomery. It is titled Anne of Green Gables because it follows the adventures of a mischievous girl, Anne Shirley, who lives in Green Gables. The story takes place in the 1890's and follows Anne through several years of her life. Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert had decided to adopt a boy to help on the farm. Instead the orphanage sent a talkative and troublesome girl. They were going to send her back, but quickly came to love Anne and decided to adopt her. The major conflict of the story is Marilla's trouble raising Anne, the protagonist. The rising action involves Anne's imagination, which always provokes her to do foolish things. In addition, Gilbert Blythe (the antagonist) provokes Anne. There never is a true turning point in the book. Anne promises to behave after each incident, but once again finds trouble. The resolution is made when Matthew, her adopted father, dies. Anne promises Matthew she'll behave just before he passes away. The characters and the plot in the book were very well developed and believable.

The writing in Anne of Green Gables was vividly descriptive. Anne always liked to imagine things, and often times the book would describe in detail what she dreamed of. The dialogue used was 3rd person. One of my favorite passages was, "Pretty? Oh pretty doesn't seem to be the right word. Nor beautiful, either. They don't go far enough. Oh, it was wonderful- wonderful. It is the first thing I saw that couldn't be improved by imagination." The theme of Anne of Green Gables would be imagination can make the rainiest days bright. The author is trying to say that imagination can lift you through troubled times. I really liked the book Anne of Green Gables. It was very entertaining and I would suggest it to all.

    April 01, 2009: A Review of L.M Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables

"Matthew Cuthbert, who's that?" she ejaculated. "Where is the boy?"

"There wasn't any boy," said Matthew wretchedly. "There was only her."

Have you ever experienced being happy until the truth comes forward and shatters your heart? Well that is something that happens to Anne all the time.

Anne is no ordinary girl. She is a skinny, red-haired girl who doesn't like her looks at all compared to the chubby, brunette girls in Avonlea, a town in Prince Edward Island in Canada. She has a temper and talks so much that you can't understand what she says! Anne is an orphan who has lived in every type of odd family until she accidentally lands in beautiful Green Gables with the old siblings, Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert. The question is whether they will keep her or return her to the orphanage. They end up keeping her after noticing how excited she was about living in their house. There, she is criticized by many people, like her neighbor Mrs. Rachel Lynde. She also faces the challenge of making friends in school. Everybody finds her odd, but soon enough, people love her and can't live without her.

Anne meets many people and eventually makes many nice friends. After a nasty incident, she has a new enemy, a charming boy named Gilbert who likes her. Soon, Anne realizes that looks don't matter and grows up to be a lovely and fair girl. She becomes very smart and joins a club. She gets into a good school but is very homesick and misses home. Marilla is very sad when she leaves home and Matthew always tries to comfort her. In the summer, Anne returns and Marilla notices that she has changed, not the funny and talkative girl she knew. Difficulties arrive and Anne learns to be brave and give up things, even the ones she has always dreamed of, for others.

This story is about Anne's life in Green Gables and the challenges and people she finds there. I loved the humorous and beautiful characters in this book. They were very realistic, unlike many other characters. It even taught me how to be brave and generous! I would recommend this realistic and moving book to all youth readers.

I Also Recommend: Magic Thief (Magic Thief Series #1), Midnight for Charlie Bone (Children of the Red King Series #1), Mister Monday (Keys to the Kingdom Series #1), Anne of Avonlea (Anne of Green Gables Series #2), Anne of the Island (Anne of Green Gables Series #3).
