(Hardcover - Book and 2 CDs)
More than a book, this is a bona fide publishing event. The largest-ever collection of New Yorker cartoons features the best of every decade in book form, plus two easy-to-browse CDs--Windows and Macintosh compatible--with every cartoon ever published in the magazine--more than 68,000 of them! Since its founding in the 1920s, The New Yorker has had a profound cultural impact on the country and the world, and has almost singlehandedly elevated the cartoon to an art form. For the first time ever, EVERY cartoon ever published in The New Yorker is collected in one place. Accompanying the cartoons in the book, several thousand of them organized chronologically, are essays by eminent New Yorker writers reflecting on the life and times (and sense of humor) of each successive decade. Additionally, each decade includes profiles and mini-portfolios of the cartoonists who made their marks on the era, from Peter Arno and Charles Addams to Bruce Eric Kaplan and Roz Chast. "Theme" features cover such subjects as Drinking, The Depression, and Politics. The two accompanying CDs feature every cartoon ever published in the magazine in a format that is accessible on any home computer and is browsable by date, cartoonist, subject, and more.
This groundbreaking book, several years in the making, has been lovingly compiled by current New Yorker cartoon editor (and respected cartoonist and author) Robert Mankoff, and the foreword is by David Remnick, the magazine's esteemed editor.
Pound for pound, The Complete Cartoons of the New Yorker may be the season's funniest book -- and that's saying something.
More Reviews and RecommendationsRobert Mankoff is the cartoon editor of The New Yorker, the founder and president of The Cartoon Bank, and an accomplished cartoonist. He is the author of The Naked Cartoonist, a book on cartooning and creativity available from BD&L, and the editor of numerous cartoon collections, each of which is a small fraction of the size of this one. He lives in New York City.

March 31, 2009: This is an excellent gift for someone who has everything. If someone has followed the cartoons through the years in the New Yorker Magazine, it is a "must have". It is clever and funny, and there are cartoons for every occasion and situation. It is a hugh "coffee table" book and it is a great conversation piece. Definitely a five-star purchase!

March 21, 2009: I looked forward to recapturing some of the "magic" of the New Yorker which I read for many years. I jumped ship when Tina Brown became Editor and converted a great magazine into a gossip and celebrity oriented rag with a deemphasis on the quality fiction that was it's hallmark. Even a change of Editorship has not brought the New Yorker back to what I wanted.
Nevertheless, I enjoyed this book which contains a sample of many of the Cartoons I treasured. My major disappointment was that the majority of Cartoons are on a DVD-ROM disk which requires a drive not found on the majority of personal computers despite the claim on the book cover. The warning was inadequate and evaded my detection. The good news is that I bought it at a heavily discounted price of $20 from Barnes and Noble and with my Member's Discount and an additional 15% Coupon it was truly a bargain.
