    Synopsis

Expertly retold to appeal to second to fourth graders, as well as older reluctant readers, each of the beautiful, high-quality books in the Classic Starts series is a literary treasure.

    Annotation

The adventures and pranks of a mischievous boy growing up in a Mississippi River town in the early nineteenth century.

    Caitlyn Payne - Children's Literature

What does a young boy do when he witnesses a murder but is terrified the murderer will come after him and kill him if he tells anyone what he saw? This terrible quandary is just one of the trials young Tom Sawyer and his friend Huckleberry Finn face after they see a man killed. On top of this worry about being attacked by the murderer, Tom has to deal with a meddlesome aunt, an ornery teacher, and a pretty girl who does not respond to his schoolboy affection. Quite an adventure for a boy who started his summer trying to get out of having to whitewash a picket fence! Fans of adventure stories, mystery buffs, or readers who enjoyed getting into scrapes with Tom years ago will enjoy this tale of a mischievous boy and his assorted pranks, trials, and intrigues. The book is funny, interesting, and thought provoking. Readers may be put off by archaic language and slang, but once you get beyond the printed words, Tom Sawyer is a wonderful book about a loveable boy who could not stay out of trouble. Part of the "Adventure Classics" series. 2005 (orig. 1876), HarperCollins, Ages 8 to 12.

July 02, 2009: I enjoyed Tom Sawyer very much, even though the plot seemed to flop around a bit. The characters were written in a way that was very clever & enjoyable. Definitly a good classic to keep for your permanent library. Keep in mind that the "jargin" they use can be a bit difficult for some readers.

May 06, 2009: To start off I really liked this book because the main character Tom Sawyer reminds me a lot of myself. Tom liked to mess around, not do what he is told, and play tricks on people. This is a lot of what I like to do. If I am told to do something I almost always find a way out of doing it just as Tom did.

I really liked the way the Mark Twain or Samuel Langhorne Clemens wrote this classic. He made it full of excitement throughout the whole story. There wasn't ever really a dull moment in this book. His tone in the story wasn't serious it was more of a playful or youthful tone. I felt the childish side of me coming out while reading this book because if is full of Tom playing tricks on people and doing silly things that would get him into trouble.

Over all I think the story was very well written for anyone who loves to read. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone. This book can be read by anyone because of the way the book is written. It is written very simply without any words that would be out of the average persons vocabulary. I really encourage people to read this book, it is really great and very humorous.
