    Synopsis

Guy (history, U. of Cambridge) turns to the original documents, rather than relying on the familiar printed collections or edited abstracts that are often compiled to perpetuate a particular legend of Stuart (1842-87). He portrays her as a whole women whose choices added up and whose decisions made sense, a shrewd and charismatic young ruler who relished power and managed to hold an unstable country together for a time. The Washington Post - Lisa Jardine

Guy's biography is a masterpiece of moderation that steadfastly avoids the lure of her scandalous reputation. Here is a life of Mary Stuart that painstakingly assembles all the surviving documentary evidence and scrupulously assesses it, weighing the false testimony of her enemies against the whitewashing of her friends.

February 16, 2009: I had previously read Phillipa Gregory's book on Mary and was curious to see how accurate she was with her research on the queen, she was good, but this book is ten times more detailed and portrays Mary Queen of Scots very well, although a doomed and used queen from the start to the finish.

December 30, 2008: Thiss a truly magnificent read. Well researched and documented it is a truly absorbing biography. If you have read other books on the same subject and think you have made up your mind, read this one with an open mind and try to imagine how it would be trying to manage a kingdom when it seemed like everyone was against you at every turn. Obviouly psychologically and physically abused by subjects and husbands, it is amazing that she made it as far as she did. A woman with true grit who probably could have been an outstanding Queen if just given the chance. Don't miss this book.
