Thakur and Newman (both of United Nations U., Tokyo) present the results of a research project, funded by the Ford Foundation, investigating non-military and non-state centric dimensions of security in Northeast, Southeast, and South Asia. The results have here taken the form of 13 papers organized under the headings of social and economic perspectives, governance, environment, and institutional security perspectives. Among the specific topics addressed are China's experience with multilateral donor institutions and poverty alleviation, embedded mercantilism in crisis in Southeast Asia, environmental and security issues in Nepal, the hydro-politics of the Mekong River Basin, and institutional transformation in ASEAN.
