A memoir of the legendary lyricist whose words launched the careers of some of the most famous performers of our times, including Frank Sinatra, Dinah Shore, Ella Fitzgerald, and many more.
Celebrated songwriter Lawrence ("All or Nothing at All," "Beyond the Sea") looks back on his life and times in a breezy, egotistical style. The nonagenarian was born to immigrant Russian Jews, and his struggles to establish himself parallel those of many other popular songwriters of the period. Of course, the work paid off: Lawrence's songs were recorded by well-known stars, from Rosemary Clooney and Buddy Hackett to Mae West and Rudy Vallee, who figure in the numerous anecdotes. In addition, Lawrence presents an engrossing view of the sometimes cutthroat popular music business (his first hit, "Play, Fiddle, Play," was the subject of a plagiarism lawsuit) and shares his opinions about current trends in popular music and about society at large (he is a political liberal). Included are lyrics to many of his songs. Recommended for larger libraries interested in popular American music.-Bruce R. Schueneman, Texas A&M Univ. March 20, 2005: Jack Lawrence is an icon in 20th century songwriting. His book is a layman's primer on the music business of yesteryear. Mr. Lawrence, like his music, is lyrical, romantic and honest in writing the story of his amazing life. And he is more than kind to the celebrities he has known, and mostly loved. A great read.

February 08, 2005: As an adult college student majoring in history, I found Mr. Lawrence's book to be truly fascinating. Last Spring I took a course on American Pop Culture which covered; the growth of the music industry, the struggle of African Americans to be taken seriously in the entertainment industry and immigrants in the 20th Century. Mr. Lawrence touches on many of these areas as well as sharing outstanding details, anecdotes about the celebrities he worked with and shows his keen sense of business savvy. It was at times extremely funny and at times rather sad but all the while very entertaining. Great for vacations or a long flight as it's a quick read as well. I couldn't put it down. I highly recommend this engrossing book.
