    Synopsis

As they pulled onto a narrow dirt road, Sairy said, "You are now entering Ruby Holler, the one and only Ruby Holler! Your lives are never going to be the same -- "

Ruby Holler is the beautiful, mysterious place that changes all of their lives forever.

    Publishers Weekly

The characters introduced here two abandoned children, their villainous guardians and a kindly country couple might have stepped out of a Dickens novel, but as Creech (Love that Dog) probes beneath their facades, the characters grow more complex than classic archetypes. Florida and her brother Dallas, raised in an orphanage run by the cold-hearted Trepids, rely on each other rather than grownups for support. They become suspicious when Mr. Trepid informs them that they are going to a place called Ruby Holler to accompany old Mr. and Mrs. Morey on separate vacations. Florida is to be Mr. Tiller Morey's companion on a canoe trip; Dallas is to help Mrs. Sairy Morey hunt down an elusive bird. Readying for the trips proves to be a journey in itself as the Moreys, Florida and Dallas make discoveries about one another as well as themselves in a soothing rural environment. This poignant story evokes a feeling as welcoming as fresh-baked bread. The slow evolution of the siblings who are no angels parallels the gradual building of mutual trust for the Moreys. The novel celebrates the healing effects of love and compassion. Although conflicts emerge, readers will have little doubt that all will end well for the children and the grandparently Moreys. Ages 8-12. (Apr.) Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.

    Biography

Winner of the 1995 Newbery Medal, Sharon Creech once had this advice for future Newbery winners: "Take a deep breath. You will have about 30 minutes between the call announcing your book is the winner and the onslaught of complete chaos. You won't know what hit you, but get ready: You're going on the ride of your life."

June 26, 2009: Since when I was a kid! I read this for the first time when I was probably ten years old and have bought and updated copies since then.

The "trouble twins", Dallas and Florida, are living in Boxton Creek Home, an orphanage run by Mr. and Mrs. Trepid. The Trepids are strict and unsympathetic. Dallas and Florida are punished more than most for breaking the stupid rules of the house. Over their thirteen years, the twins have been adopted many times, invariably by unwise and abusive adults who return them to the orphanage. One day, the twins are "hired" for a summer by an old couple from Ruby Holler, Tiller and Sairy, as companions for their separate vacations: Florida for Tiller's boat trip down the Rutabago River; Dallas for Sairy's birding expedition to the island of Kangadoon. This will be the first time either of the couples have been separated for "most of their lives". The twins bloom under the freedom and responsibilities given to them in Ruby Holler, but remain suspicious of Tiller and Sairy, as they have been of all adults, especially when they keep making mistakes that would previously have earned them severe punishments. But Tiller and Sairy realize they were just getting good at being parents when their children moved out, so the twins offer them a second chance at life.

Even now as an adult I look back at the story because it was a great memory from childhood and I enjoy the quick read ever I have some downtime and an empty night stand

I Also Recommend: Walk Two Moons, Inkheart (Inkheart Trilogy #1).
