The book requires complicated measuring and cutting, makes use of materials that are not easy to find, and has a challenging vocabulary. Schmidt provides a detailed introduction about how and why kites fly. He then presents one set of general instructions, containing 20 steps along with illustrations, that provides the basics for the 18 designs that follow. From the "Red Admiral" to the "Albatross," each of these projects includes a materials list and an intricate grid design for cutting and measuring, along with a vibrant full-color photo of the completed kite. It might be difficult for some readers to switch back and forth between these specifics and the general directions. Items that are not readily available are noted, along with tips on where to find them. Interesting facts about kites are interspersed throughout the book. A good choice for advanced kite builders.-G.
