In 1974, the U.S. patent for aspartame (NutraSweet) was revoked due to independent finds that it caused holes in the brains of laboratory animals. Less than ten years later, the FDA reversed itself and aspartame is now a multi-billion dollar artificial sweetener found in over 5,000 products. 78 percent of all non-drug complaints to the FDA in 1995 concerned aspartame. Data in FDA Registry allegedly associated with aspartame: convulsions, gastrointestinal disorders, serious visual problems including blindness, rheumatic complaints, birth defects and death.
In Sweet Poison: How the World's Most Popular Artificial Sweetener is Killing US--My Story, Hull chronicles the life-threatening effects of aspartame poisoning, her fight back to health, as well as her courageous battles against the drug companies and government officials who had evidence since 1970 of the chemical sweetener's serious problems. She reveals aspartame's known deadly effects on pilots in the cockpit, the elderly, dieters and, most alarming of all, children.
With its shocking twists and gripping revelations, Janet Starr Hull's courageous and multi-layered story exposes the lethal truth about aspartame poisoning and the greed of individuals and corporations that put personal profit before the public's safety.

This author tries to be both novelist and investigative reporter as she describes her ill health and her investigation of aspartame as the cause. She's identified as a certified nutritionist, but the book lacks authority, and its overly-dramatic narrative is tedious. Perhaps an alarm on the subject should be sounded<-->by a better spokesperson. No index. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
