    Synopsis

Once in a generation a novel comes along that taps a vein of universal human experience, resonating with readers of all ages. THE LOVELY BONES is such a book -- a #1 bestseller celebrated at once for its artistry, for its luminous clarity of emotion, and for its astonishing power to lay claim to the hearts of millions of readers around the world. Now in an audiobook edition read by the author, with movie tie-in art.
"My name was Salmon, like the fish; first name, Susie. I was fourteen when I was murdered on December 6, 1973."
So begins the story of Susie Salmon, who is adjusting to her new home in heaven, a place that is not at all what she expected, even as she is watching life on earth continue without her -- her friends trading rumors about her disappearance, her killer trying to cover his tracks, her grief-stricken family unraveling. Out of unspeakable tragedy and loss, THE LOVELY BONES succeeds, miraculously, in building a tale filled with hope, humor, suspense, even joy.
The major motion picture version of THE LOVELY BONES, directed by Peter Jackson and starring Rachel Weisz, Susan Sarandon, Mark Wahlberg, Stanley Tucci, and Saoirse Ronan is scheduled for release on December 11, 2009.

A Difficult book to read & rateby Lalaine

November 23, 2009: I want to say that I loved this book and that I would recommend it to everyone I know but the truth is that this book is a difficult read. Aside from the preliminary core subject matter of a young girl's brutal death, I found it uneasy that it didn't have for me a "happy ending". I learned about this family and I was expecting closure on their behalf, but the author made none for them but rather focused on the protagonist's current state of being. I was left begging for answers, peace for the family, and acknowledgement of a loving father's search for justice.

AS if the author is hinting that is justice on earth isn't achieved then the powers that be will find a humorous yet pertinent way to rid a criminal...however long it may take. We read that this loving young family agonizes over several years for the murder of their little girl and that the killer lives as many years as well......how is that justice?

November 22, 2009: Initiating a melancholy and pugnacious setting, The Lovely Bones immediately captures the attention of the reader into a shocking atmosphere. Exposing the reality of cruel possibilities, The Lovely Bones continues to take risks and stretch all boundaries of comfort. Alice Sebold's endless risks in writing style and plot are a large part of the reader's desire to continue the novel. Learning to live with the structure of Heaven and the tortures of her family below on earth, Susie Salmon, the main character, grasps the hearts and minds of the audience with her innocent thoughts and intriguing fascinations. The way Susie expresses herself from an unattainable holding place is what really drew my allurement. I found myself longing as she longed, coveting what she coveted, and injected with the largest dose of empathy. Told entirely from Susie's point of view, it wasn't at all hard to imagine a narrative voice. Though I did not enjoy the wholly melancholy nature of the read, it proved to be a delightsome escape from a rushing world. Perfect for any snow day or bed time treat, The Lovely Bones gave me much to ponder about. The importance of love and always loving, the need to feel and always feeling, and the magic of family, and always staying were incredible themes of the work. After finishing the book, I found myself with a superbly enhanced appreciation and love for my family. The only awkward thing was the end. I did not particularly enjoy the ending of the book, but that factoid is miniscule considering the important themes presented throughout the read. Take a rewarding risk, and READ THIS BOOK! It's simply a lovely book.
