    Synopsis

At the end of WWI, Italian war hero and poet Gabriele D'Annunzio captured the coastal city of Fiume (now Rieka, Slovenia) and occupied it for 16 months. In this study, Ledeen presents a history of D'Annunzio's occupation and shows how his charismatic style of leadership paved the way for Mussolini's dictatorship. Ledeen is with the American Enterprise Institute in Washington. This reprint of the 1977 edition contains a new introduction from the author.
