      Synopsis

Goethals (Williams College), Georgia J. Sorenson (U. Maryland) and Jas. MacGregor Burns (also Williams) have edited a wide-ranging reference of some 400 articles (1,000 to 6,000 words each) by 330 contributors. Topics are diverse: Castro, Rockefeller (JD), Kroc, The Beatles, gangs, E. Timor, Lombardi, D-Day.... Biographies account for a third of the 1.2 million words. Topics include case studies, gender issues, and theories that relate to business, management, politics, history, psychology. The set contains 150 illustrations and 300 sidebars from public records, memoirs, newspapers. Four appendices (95 p.) provide: a general bibliography; a directory of educational programs; presidential speeches on foreign policy and war (including the younger Bush's 2002 State of the Union speech); and extracts from sacred texts. While no "see also" references appear in the entries the set contains 125 pages of index (in v.4 only). Sage has, again, been the first to hit the market with a major reference in a rapidly growing field of the social sciences. Virtually every academic and large public library will need the Encyclopedia of Leadership. No mention of plans for an electronic edition. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

      Annotation

"The editors' eclectic, interdisciplinary, and global approach goes far beyond the usual literature on management to create a broad foundation for this developing field, drawing concepts and examples from religion, philosophy, business, politics, the arts, and other fields. Entries are often accompanied by sidebars with excerpts from primary texts and by pull quotes with stimulating epigrams. Many articles include extended case studies of leaders ranging from Alexander the Great to Louis B. Mayer."--"Reference that rocks," American Libraries, May 2005.

      Library Journal

This authoritative reference source, edited by Pulitzer Prize-winning presidential biographer Burns and written by some 400 scholars from 17 countries, comprehensively covers a burgeoning new field of academic study leadership. Its scope is amazingly broad, reflecting the interdisciplinary applications of the subject. The 373 alphabetically arranged entries are accompanied by 150 photos and other illustrations, with 300 sidebars drawn from a variety of sources. Approximately one third of the entries provide biographical information about men and women who have made significant contributions to the field. Other categories include case studies, leadership studies, followership, women and gender, personal characteristics of model leaders, leadership styles, and leadership theories. The appendixes following the main body of the work include a six-page select bibliography of books related to leadership, a directory of 250 leadership programs with accompanying mission statements, key foreign policy and war speeches of U.S. presidents, and excerpts from sacred texts illuminating "the role of leaders and leadership concepts." Bottom Line Because of its breadth, ease of navigation, high level of scholarship, clear writing, and practical format, this model encyclopedia should help establish leadership as a normative field of study. Highly recommended. Jack Forman, San Diego Mesa Coll. Lib., CA Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
