    Biography

Though Laura Hillenbrand had been writing about thoroughbred racing since 1988 as a contributing writer/editor for Equus magazine and other publications, it was her riveting 2001 retelling of the super-inspirational Seabiscuit saga that captured the nation's attention.

February 07, 2010: A few years after middle-class American families could afford automobiles, the stock market crashed. Tom Smith a quite, horseman easily found a job training horses for former Buick Car Salesman Charles Howard. Lower class families such as the Pollards struggled during this time of depression, and sixteen year old Johnny (Red) Pollard was left by his family to live with a horse owner so he could Jocky his race horses. Horse racing was the only way for Red to survive the depression. Smith found the horse at a small race in Boston, or as smith said, the horse found him. At first, Pollard called the horse "nuts", but eventually came to find he was an amazing animal. The colts name was Seabiscuit, at first he was mean, wild, and unridable. With hard work, intense training, and belief they turned the unperfect race horse into a champion. The story of Seabiscuit is a story of a cultural icon, the horse himself was a hero, and the three men who helped lead him to victory against one of the greatest animal athlete and jocky, War Admiral, were heroes as well. The part of Seabiscuits story that makes him such an inspiration is how he overcame a life or death obstacle when he encountered a leg injury that could've ended his life. His trainer and jocky knew the end of his race carreer was not over. He recovered and became the underdog that almost every American was rooting for against reigning champions. The captivating story touches hearts, because each character overcomes many challenges that bring them to one another where they put their talents and skills together to win it all. Readers that are interest in miracle stories would enjoy and historic, detailed read. I personally liked how the sad history of the depression was narrated into a joyous victory that any sports fan would appreciate. I didn't always like how some irrelevant parts were added, it felt like it added unnecessary reading, when it could've gotten right to the point. Overall the story of Seabiscuit was a page turner that inspired the true story of a hero.

I Also Recommend: The Blind Side, Miracle on Ice.

August 29, 2009: I will admit, I saw the movie first. However, this only made me enjoy the book more, for it is the amazing detail with which the author brings to life the story of Seabiscuit that makes it such a wonderful read. Yes, I cried. And I was in shock at reading of the horrors the jockeys would inflict upon themselves. Absorbing, wonderful...just wonderful. Some of the best written non-fiction out there.
