June 23, 2006: An ideological thunderstorm brooded over Berlin in 1919. Armed political extremists clashed in the streets and the social democratic government tottered precariously. What better place for some murders and desecrated corpses? This a benchmark book against which other works of intelligent historical fiction can be measured in the future. So seamlessly is the deep research behind Rosa integrated into a gripping story that we learn much about Berlin during the seedtime of Nazism as we flip pages briskly seeking clues about a depraved serial killer, a mysterious political assassination, and the bizarre abuse of a celebrated cadaver. The more German history you know, the more you will appreciate Rabb's remarkable achievement.

July 26, 2005: Rosa by Jonathan Rabb is one of those books you pick and don't put down until your done. The characters are very good and the story takes you to 1919 in Berlin where six women have been killed by a serial murderer. One of them turns out to be Rosa Luxemburg who was a revolutionary. Inspector Hoffner is put on the case and it leads him to some of the early Nazi leaders. It all seems true and that makes it an excellent historical novel. I recommend it highly.
