(Hardcover)
Hailed by the New York Times as a rare and original collection of "verbal and visual witticisms...as joyfully illustrated as it is absurd," ARM IN ARM has delighted childrenand grown-upsfor years with its endless tales, gleeful riddles, circular poems, and fantastical drawings.
An illustrated collection of verses, tongue twisters, riddles, and seemingly endless tales all of which feature a play on words and images.
This wild picture book is a postmodern experiment with language and pictures. Intentionally inaccessible, the book attempts to show the nebulous nature of language. Spoofing on nursery rhymes and an endless array of other literary tropes, Charlip twists and turns his words and his images to make readers question what they understand about language. He intends the piece to be delightful and playful, but it may frustrate readers hoping to make sense out of his whimsical vignettes. 1997 (orig.

June 07, 2003: I received my hard back copy of the 1969 version of Arm In Arm as a child and have cherished it to this day. It continues to inspire the wonder and creativity that I value from being a child. Of all the books that were included in the sets I received back then, this is the only book I took with me during every move. Sharing this treasure with my daughter beginning when she was five reinforced the inspiration I feel. She becomes jumping-up-and-down excited when we read 'mommy's special book'. Now that she is turning 8 I'm buying this newest version so she will have her own to treasure always.
