Magic is forbidden throughout the Four Realms. For decades, sorcerers and those associating with them were hunted to near extinction.
But Seri, a Leiran noblewoman living in exile, is no stranger to defying the unjust laws of her land. She is sheltering a wanted fugitive who possesses unusual abilities-a fugitive with the fate of the realms in his hands...
Leiran noblewoman Seriana Marguerite of Comigor leaves her royal surroundings to live a life in exile after her husband, Karon, and her newborn child are murdered as sorcerers. Due to the dangerous history of magic use in the Four Realms, its practice is now forbidden and all sorcerers are hunted down and murdered. While in exile, Seri encounters a dangerous fugitive in need of shelter. She tries many ways of communicating with the stranger but only when using long-lost phrases from the mystical J'Ettanne does he seem to recognize some of her speech. The stranger, D'Natheil, has problems with his memory that leave him and Seri very frustrated. Regardless of Seri's and D'Natheil's initial violent bickering, Seri feels compelled to help D'Natheil and is determined to discover the truth about him. While caring for D'Natheil, Seri finds that this stranger actually possesses uncanny abilities and may be a sorcerer as well as a strong warrior. Throughout the novel, more details of D'Natheil's past are revealed, along with flashbacks to Seri's past life as nobility. Berg has created an intellectual fantasy with deep characterization and a complex world that will be appreciated by epic fantasy readers. The first-person narration will appeal to teens, and readers who appreciate strong female protagonists will find a worthy heroine in Seriana. This first book in the Bridge of D'Arnath series will be enjoyed by fans of Dennis McKiernan, Terry Goodkind, and Robert Jordan. (The Bridge of D'Arnath, Book 1).
