I dreamed I had an interview with God." So begins a mysterious and inspirational text that had been quietly residing on the Internet when Reata Strickland first heard about it. Anonymously written, short, and thought-provoking, the message, Strickland knew, could be made more powerful with the right presentation. She found meditative photographs of nature scenes, and created a Flashplayer presentation that scrolls slowly through the text. In May of 2001, she posted it without fanfare on the web page of her local district of the United Methodist Church. Word spread like wildfire, and soon millions of readers were talking about Interview with God.
Strickland has received thousands of e-mails from around the world, and countless requests for a book. Eight translators have given her free use of versions in Chinese, Hungarian, Creole, and other tongues, and she has even created t-shirts which have begun to sell rapidly. Here, finally, is the book that everyone has been waiting for.
On May 29 of last year, Alabama Web designer Reata Strickland discovered an anonymously written "Interview with God" and posted it on her local congregation's Web site. There was no advertising or promotion, but within a week half a million people had visited the site, and by July it had 13 million hits. In Interview with God, a small gift book from the Free Press, Strickland offers the original posting's simple text with rather predictable nature photography (obligatory shots of sunsets, mountains, fall foliage, etc.). Strickland is listed here as the designer and editor of the book; its authorship is still in question. Will the real author of the "Interview with God" please stand up?
