May 10, 2003: Terrible waste of time. If a book is supposed to be about the internals of the product vs. the internals of the Sql Server executable, it should cover the whole product. This book is nothing but the 6.5 book warmed over. And ignore the idiotic review elsewhere on this page that claims it isn't 'reasonable' to expect coverage of the internals of Sql Server's XML features in a book puportedly about its internals. It certainly is 'reasonable' and completely normal. Every other MS 'Inside' book that I can think of covers the entirely of the internals of whatever product or technology it covers. I'm certainly glad books like Inside Windows didn't take the easy way out and say, 'Hey, the kernel is the only real internal piece of the product -- we don't have to cover file systems or fibers or other things outside the kernel.' This book should cover SqlXml, Full-text Search, Replication, Dts, and, heck, even clustering and Olap would be nice. This book was a great book when Ron Soukup first wrote it for Sql Server 6.5. It has gone steadily downhill since then.
