      Synopsis

After September 11, famed photographer Ron Haviv, who has covered conflicts in Africa, Russia, the Middle East and the Balkans, embarked on a trip to Afghanistan with writer Ilana Ozernoy (U.S. News & World Report, the San Francisco Chronicle and The Boston Globe).

The photographs capture the period from October 2001, through the liberation of the city of Kabul, to the fall of the Taliban regime at the end of December 2001.

August 30, 2002: I don't usually buy books about war, but the stunning imagery caught my eye. It was fascinating to see Afghanistan through the eyes of Americans who were actually there during the war. Many parts of the book are sad but I feel this is important to learn about. I really admire the authors, who volunteered to travel to such a dangerous place when most people were afraid to fly domestically.

August 30, 2002: This book was recommended by a friend of mine, who said the book really opened her mind to the people of the country of Afghanistan and to their struggles. After reading this book, I see what she means! The pictures are beautiful, in a haunting way, and the images will stay in my mind for a long time. After hearing so much about Afghanistan on the news, it was refreshing to finally see what life is like for the real people. The commentary is sharp and savyy and went well with the photos. This is one book I won't forget because I learned so much from it!
