Mym was a dutiful son, but rather than agree to his father's choice for his marriage, he took up the Red Sword, symbol of office of the Incarnation of War, in order to ameliorate some of the suffering caused by Earth's constant petty wars. But Mym discovered that Satan was waiting to trap him, and he must now take desperate measures to outwit the evil genius who aimed to destroy the world....
Wielding a Red Sword continues Piers Anthony's most ambitious series to date--Incarnations of Immortality. Mym was a dutiful son, but his father interfered in his love life too often. Rather than wed without love, Mym takes up the Red Sword.
The fourth book in Anthony's popular Incarnations of Immortality series describes the recruitment of an Indian prince to become the latest Incarnation of Warserving alongside Death, Time, Nature and others. Mym reluctantly accepts the office as a way to cut through the tangled political web that has produced famine in his homeland and trampled on his private life. As hard as Mym works to keep earthly peace, however, Satan is ahead of him with snares and lures that lead to hell. Anthony's setting of a world where both science and magic work was charming in previous volumes but becomes troublesome here: demons coexist with biological warfare; two teardrops from an Incarnation are all it takes to end one aspect of the conflict in Ireland. In fact, most of this weak entry in the series is concerned with finding a proper mate for the hapless Mym. As before, though, the liveliest part of the book is the author's note, a 30-page open letter to his fans in which Anthony feels free to be cantankerous, boastful, whimsical and self-revealing. October 10, 2009: That is what truely defins this book, is war a neccissary part of life? Featuring a very dynamic lead character, Mym, it becomes apparent that he is somewhat torn about the concept of war. In life he strove to end it, now he is in charge of it. Of course Satan, makes an appearence. This book is a favorite in the series for me, second only to "On A Pale Horse".
I highly...HIGHLY...reccommend reading the three precceding books, however, as many characters make a reapperence.I Also Recommend: Bearing an Hourglass (Incarnations of Immortality #2), With a Tangled Skein (Incarnations of Immortality #3), On a Pale Horse (Incarnations of Immortality #1).

October 25, 2008: Wielding a Red Sword is the fourth installment in the Incarnations of Immortality series. It centers around Mars, the incarnation of War. The setup is similar to the other books in the series in that the plot leads up to the final engagement between Mars and Satan....a showdown of sorts. The thing about these books is that they feel thrown together. It reads like Anthony made the story up as he went along, and that's fine except that the story has the feel of a rough draft. It was interesting in parts though and a quick read. The first book in the series, On a Pale Horse, is by far the best
