Taking six divergent writers as examples, Verma (English, U. of Pittsburgh-Johnstown) examines the development of English literature in India in both colonial and postcolonial periods. He finds that the colonial fantasy of British India was succeeded in the first half of the 20th century by a fantasy of the reinstituted sovereign nation state. The two phases, he says, and the sociohistorical processes they represent, cannot be understood without each other. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
