    Synopsis

Immensely popular during his lifetime, H. G. Wells, along with Jules Verne, is credited with inventing science fiction. This new volume Wells’s best-loved and most critically acclaimed works. In each, the author grounds his fantastical imagination in scientific fact and conjecture while lacing his narrative with vibrant action, not merely to tell a “ripping yarn,” but to offer a biting critique on the world around him. “The strength of Mr. Wells,” wrote Arnold Bennett, “lies in the fact that he is not only a scientist, but a most talented student of character, especially quaint character. He will not only ingeniously describe for you a scientific miracle, but he will set down that miracle in the midst of a country village, sketching with excellent humor the inn-landlady, the blacksmith, the chemist’s apprentice, the doctor, and all the other persons whom the miracle affects.”

    Biography

"Human history becomes more and more a race between education and catastrophe," H. G. Wells once said. Widely revered as the father of science fiction, the English novelist, journalist, sociologist, and historian penned ominous -- and educated -- glimpses at humanity's possible future, including The Time Machine (1895), The Invisible Man (1897), and The War of the Worlds (1898).

There are seven wonderful tales of adventure in this fascinating book and each tale holds your attention right to the very end. Each story is so well written by this great author that you can't put the book down until you finish each story.

December 30, 2009: Received this from my daughter for Christmas. The edition looks nice and is put together well. HG Wells is an under-appreciated author to this day. This book has 7 of his great works, including my two personal favoraites- The Island of Dr. Moreau and The Invisible Man. It also includes The Time Machine, War of the Worlds, Fisrt Men In the Moon, Food of the Gods and In the Days of the Comet. Wells used his science fiction tales as cautionary comments on society and they can get a little dense. But he did create memorable ideas and characters that stick with you. His adventures don't soar as high as Jules Verne's did, but there is a greater depth than most of Verne's work.

I Also Recommend: The Complete Short Stories H G Wells, The Mysterious Island, 20,000 Leagues under the Sea (Sterling Unabridged Classics Series).
