The king has the perfect idea for the queen's birthday present—a new bed! The carpenter's apprentice is chosen to build it, but how big must it be? The king takes off his shoe, measures around the queen (including her crown), and gives the measurements to the apprentice. But when the little apprentice builds the bed, he uses his own feet as a standard, and the bed is too small! How to solve the problem? How measurements became standardized is cleverly told in this amusing fable.
Thrown in jail because the bed he made for the Queen is too small, an apprentice comes up with a more accurate way of measuring size.

April 10, 2009: This story sparks the imagination as to how big things really are. Children who hear this book will want to measure things with their foot or someone elses. This is a great introduction to standard measurement using a ruler as a guideline. As a kindergarten teacher, this story is a great supplement to standard measurement.
