May 16, 2001: I read this through in two long sittings! Through an interpreter, a Yanomamo shaman describes his struggle to survive the difficulties of the Amazon jungle, the terrifying spirits around him, and the confusing invasions of the 20th century west--esp. those of supposedly neutral (or helpful) anthropologists. Most interesting to some will be his accounts of being treated like a zoological specimen in a cage, of not being taken seriously as a person, of not being listened to when anthropologists don't hear what they want to hear. It may undermine your confidence in supposedly unbiased anthropology and ethnography. It will certainly amaze you with its candid descriptions of 'primitive' warfare, rituals, etc. Don't miss any of the fascinating appendices!
