      Children's Literature

Today's library is chock full of books and much more. Libraries are places where we can go to look up information, learn about many subjects, and borrow books, magazines, videos, and music. In order to organize a collection and to be able to find an item in the library, there was a need for a classification system. One that is used in many libraries is called the Dewey Decimal system and kids are presented with an example. The Library of Congress was founded in 1800 and it now has more than 17 million books in its collection. Fun Facts, which are scattered throughout the text, highlight important people and interesting facts--for example, the word library comes from the Latin word for book; the Library of Congress has more than 2 million visitors annually. Full color drawings and photographs clearly depict what is described. Backmatter includes a glossary, web site reference and index. Part of the "Our Community" series. 2000, Rosen, Ages 5 to 8, $17.26. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
