Provides a brief look at the history of libraries, some different types of libraries, and the services they provide.
Gr 2-4-An overview of the history and present state of libraries. Full-color photographs and reproductions show a variety of types of libraries and users as well as artifacts and archival illustrations relating to the production of books. Unfortunately, many of the pictures of library patrons are posed and formal rather than candid and lively. Raatma looks back to the "first library," a collection of clay tablets in Mesopotamia, and traces the development to current-day, public-supported institutions that offer a wide range of activities and services. A list of organizations and on-line sites is appended. The broad scope of this book dictates a sketchy coverage with seemingly arbitrary choices of what to include and what to ignore. However, it offers useful information on the subject.-Jean Pollock, King Country Library System, Seattle, WA
