Synopsis

The eagerly anticipated sequel to the astounding smash hit Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone is finally here! No need to wait — Harry's back for his second year at Hogwarts, where the infamous Chamber of Secrets has been opened for the first time in 50 years. The monster that is unleashed is literally petrifying Hogwarts students (turning them into stone, that is), and who is the primary suspect? Harry Potter himself. Add to this some enormous spiders, a Deathday Party, a ghost named Moaning Myrtle who haunts the girls' bathroom, and lots and lots of suspense, and you'll soon find yourself engrossed in another terrific tale in which magic does exist and good eventually triumphs over evil.

Annotation

When the Chamber of Secrets is opened again at the Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry, second-year student Harry Potter finds himself in danger from a dark power that has once more been released on the school.

Children's Literature

In this eagerly awaited sequel to Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Harry Potter returns for his second year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry after surviving a dreadful summer with his muggle/human relatives the Dursleys. Harry, along with his friends Ron and Hermione, confronts another mystery involving an evil force emanating from a chamber of secrets below the school. Clues include a flying car, a book written in invisible ink that takes Harry into the past, and a ghost in a bathroom. To solve the mystery and save the school from closure and Hagrid from jail, Harry must confront his long feared nemesis Voldemort. Children and adults alike will revel in this splendid continuation of Harry Potter's adventures.

January 23, 2010: I only had paperback versions of the first four Harry Potter books, but this series is definitely a keeper, so I upgraded to the hard cover copies. They now sit proudly on my bookshelf!

Although the weakest out of the entire series, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is still an outstanding sequel to the first Harry Potter book, in which Harry, Ron, and Hermione continue their adventures as Voldemort attempts to return yet again!

Kids are in peril often, but at the hand of fantasy creatures most of the time: giant spiders and an angry tree attack, and a basilisk (giant serpent) has Medusa-like abilities, nearly killing characters and putting them in a rigid, comatose state -- it also chases Harry. Harry falls from his broom and breaks his arm, then bones in his arm are magically and mistakenly removed. A house elf punishes himself by hitting his head repeatedly. In a practice wizards' duel, a (small) snake threatens a student. A spell backfires and Ron coughs up slugs. Two main characters almost die in the book's climax. Close

  • Language:

Hermione is called a "mudblood" by Draco, an offensive term in the Potter world meaning "dirty blood."

What Parents Need to Know

About Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (Harry Potter #2)

Parents need to know that though similar to book one, this well-written, exciting sequel keeps kids glued to the page. Illustrations are clever but minimal. This story motivates children to tackle its greater length and complexity and play imaginative games. The young heroes find themselves in many tense situations: in a flying car, surrounded by giant spiders, and facing a giant serpent with Medusa-like abilities. Two characters are near death in the book's climax, but they survive.

Families Can Talk About

Families can talk about year two at Hogwarts and what Harry learns about himself. What traits are helping him become a hero figure -- and do you feel like you have any of those same qualities? Why must Harry face his greatest enemy alone -- and do you think you could do the same thing? What do we find out about the diary later in the series that makes it so important?
