This boxed collection includes four painted 28 by 28 inch color maps by renowned Tolkien artist John Howe, and an illustrated hardcover book by Sibley explaining the importance and evolution of geography in Tolkien's work. Although the set was first printed in 1994, the maps of Beleriand and Númenor have never before been published in the U.S. The set also includes maps of Wilderland, and Middle-Earth. The maps are loose inside a hard-bound folder, and can be removed for display or framing. Sibley's text offers insight into the specific role of each place name in the stories, and background on how the maps came into being. Sibley is the author of several books on Tolkien's work. More Reviews and RecommendationsBrian Sibley is the author of The Map of Tolkien's Middle-earth, Chicken Run: Hatching the Movie, and The Land of Narnia: Exploring the World of C.S. Lewis. He lives in England.
J.R.R. Tolkien (1892-1973), beloved throughout the world as the creator of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, was a professor of Anglo-Saxon at Oxford, a fellow of Pembroke College, and a fellow of Merton College until his retirement in 1959. His chief interest was the linguistic aspects of the early English written tradition, but even as he studied these classics he was creating a set of his own.

January 02, 2009: This collection of four fully illustrated maps (Lord of the Rings artist: John Howe) and the history of them is amazing. Each map is a few square feet containing a different section or time of middle Earth. The maps are Beriland, Middle Earth, The Hobbit (Bilbo's travels), and Numenor (the map that, though very plain I think is the most interesting. All four maps are brightly colored and can be looked over four hours. I have know doubt in your being satisfied. Truly inspirational and a must buy.
I Also Recommend: Tolkien, The Histories of Middle-earth Box Set, The Atlas of Middle-Earth, The Children of Hurin.
