    Synopsis

Macabre yet hugely entertaining, Dexter in the Dark takes America's most endearing murderer—star of a hit Showtime series—to places even he isn't comfortable exploring. A blood spatter analyst for the Miami police,Dexter has seen his share of gruesome deeds—and committed a few himself. But when he investigates a particularly terrible crime scene at a local university, everything changes.

    Publishers Weekly

In Lindsay's third novel to feature endearing Miami cop and serial killer Dexter Morgan (after 2005's Darkly Devoted Dexter), the Dark Passenger, the voice inside Dexter's head that from time to time drives him to the "Theme Park of the Unthinkable," inexplicably disappears while Morgan is investigating a gruesome double murder on the University of Miami campus. The crime scene, at which two co-eds were ritualistically burned and beheaded, gives even the human vivisection-loving vigilante the creeps. As the burned and beheaded body count continues to mount, Morgan realizes that the force behind the killings is something even more evil than his Dark Passenger. Though the macabre wit that powered the first two installments of this delightfully dark series (also a hit on TV's Showtime) is still evident, this third entry takes a decidedly deep introspective turn as Dexter is forced to contemplate not only life without his enigmatic companion but also who-or what-he truly is. MY FAVORITE SERIAL KILLER!by jansquared

November 01, 2009: I have been watching the Showtime series of "Dexter" from the first airing and was enthralled by his character. I decided to read the original book the series is based upon; and low and behold I found there was more than one- with the latest one being released in a few weeks. Well, I snapped up the existing ones and Pre-ordered the newest and had a field day reading straight through them from beginning to end. These books are monstrously good reading and even made me laugh out loud a few times (I have a perverse sense of humor sometimes). The story line is great throughout but, if you are expecting these books to follow the show, you're in for a big surprise. The books and television series are just different enough to keep you wanting both. If you aren't adverse to some descriptive murder scenes or if you aren't a fan of Dexter to begin with, then stay away from the books. They aren't exactly gory but do get somewhat into detail. Above all else, these books are actually easy reading. If you are a fast reader, you can wiz through one in an afternoon or evening. Personally, I can't wait to see if another book will be coming out. I hope you enjoy these books as much as I do...they are so worth the time you spend reading them.

Disappointing with few expected laugh out loud moments or traits from a known characterby Ktunk-Reads

August 29, 2009: Why take a great character with a lovable outlook, a killer's instinct, and some of the best possible conflicts know to literature and ruin it by placing him under supernatural influence? I love the supernatural, but even more so I love a well written character that stands on his own with no divine help. Until now Dexter was that character. I get that the author needed a mechanism to cause doubt and insecurity, but an outside source that wasn't already part of the real world takes us in a wrong direction. Dexter was tormented in the best way and now his story is nothing more than a creature influence that could easily be any of a hundred environmental variables. I think Jeff has a great grasp of writing the supernatural but it should have been done with another character. My reccomendations show how one author can address the supernatural with one great character and a different real life character dealing with supernatural situations in two wonderful stories.

I Also Recommend: Darkly Dreaming Dexter, Dexter by Design, Odd Thomas (Odd Thomas Series #1), The Good Guy, Dearly Devoted Dexter.
