    Synopsis

Harriet the Spy refuses to become ruffled when an unidentified person starts leaving disturbing notes all over the quiet little beach town of Water Mill. She’s determined to discover the author of the notes. And she drags her best friend, mousy Beth Ellen, into all kinds of odd and embarrassing situations in her efforts to reveal the culprit. Observing in her own special, caustic way with her ever-present notebook, Harriet the Spy is on the case. But will she be ready to face the truth when she finds it?

    Annotation

While at the beach for the summer, Harriet tries to uncover the author of mysterious religious notes that appear all over town and which make her ponder her own beliefs, and Beth Ellen meets the mother she last saw when she was four years old.

    Children's Literature

As this reprint of the second book in the series proves, Harriet the Spy has held up fairly well since her creation nearly forty years ago. Harriet is still not everyone's cup of tea, however. Too often she is the thoughtless, abrasive adolescent that the Preacher calls a "little rich critter." She and her friend Beth Ellen are precisely that, though as this story proves, Beth Ellen is more of a poor little rich girl. With the point of view seesawing between the two girls, we watch Harriet—eyes narrowed—in hot pursuit of her latest mystery. The mystery is irrelevant, though, in view of everything else happening during this summer in the Southhamptons—silly, careless parents appear; menstruation is faced; contact is made with kids at a totally different spectrum of the economy. Herein lies the story's strength, and the secret to why these books have persevered—Fitzhugh—along with M. E. Kerr—was at the vanguard of this new kind of book for kids, stories that unapologetically began to delve into what the new suburban adolescent was thinking and feeling. 2001 (orig. 1965), Delacorte Press, $17.99 and $15.95. Ages 10 up. Reviewer: Kathleen Karr

June 22, 2007: A very young-type of Nancy Drew mystery that will keep your kids reading until the end trying to figure out who posted those notes all over the beach town.
