June 03, 2008: As a former Marine turned middle-aged lawyer, I appreciate the combination of first hand experience with his writing skills and historical knowledge. Mr. Leckie served as a Corporal in the USMC in the Pacific. After the war, he became a college history professor. He has not forgotten what it was like, but tells the story very well and puts it in context. It's like being there and yet viewing the full scope of the conflict at the same time--a remarkable perspective.

November 21, 2001: I loved this book. It was compeling and well written. I like how the author moves from grand strategy of generals to the fight for survival of the typical marine. The book is well balanced and very entertaining.
