Dr. Richard Marfuggi has written extensively and appeared frequently on television and radio to discuss his specialty. Now, he presents a comprehensive, practical guide for anyone contemplating plastic or cosmetic surgery. With specific chapters on liposuction, rhinoplasty, facelifts, scar revision, breast augmentation/reduction, and other procedures-plus extensive information on risks and realities, finding a reputable surgeon, calculating costs, and much more-this is the one and only book consumers need to read when thinking about plastic surgery.
The book contains black-and-white illustrations.
This book is written for patients as a guide to plastic surgery procedures. The focus is almost exclusively on cosmetic procedure. Preoperative considerations, descriptions of the procedures, and post-operative recovery are all included. The purpose is to provide accurate, detailed, and understandable information on plastic surgery to prospective patients. While several other books are the market, there are only a couple with this focus that are written by surgeons. The author tries to make a broad based presentation, but the book is inevitably written from his perspective. Some newer procedures are not well covered, and the book is better suited for some physicians' practices over others. It is directed toward patients. The only reason a physician might want it is to use it as a possible reference to suggest to patients. The definition and details of the range of cosmetic surgeries are covered, with one chapter devoted to reconstruction. The first part, essentially a long chapter, is a compendium of issues such as how to choose a surgeon and how to deal with insurance. Organization is simplified a single author, but such issues as cost, method of procedure, and type of anesthetic reveals this author's bias, which mildly limits the appeal. The advantage of an physician authoring the book is the medical accuracy of what is presented. The style is easy to read and well organized. This book competes well with other patient guidebooks. Although it is a paperback printed on inexpensive paper, this is reflected in the low price. A physician should purchase the book before recommending it to patients to be aware of what is missing on new procedures (not very much) and how his/herpractice may differ from the author's.
