August 01, 2003: I bought the book about a year ago, at the Los Angeles Times book fair. I just finished it and I have to tell you: It is a great book! I enjoyed it more so because I can relate to many of Manuela's experiences. I too was brought up Catholic. I too hate the hypocrisy of the catholic church hierarchy. I cannot see injustice and keep quiet. Your story shook me more than once, and more than once I was reminded of events in my life. I felt anger, joy, pain, etc. So I just wanted to thank you for bringing back my love of reading, for re-discovering myself, and for the many breakthroughs I had. I especially liked the fact that you made some clarifications at the end as to what was fiction and what was not. Thanks again, and I look forward to reading your next or previous books. Sincerely, Luis

September 04, 2001: Manuela, By Gregory Kauffman is an exciting novel depicting the life of Manuela Saenz, who historically is known as the mistress of South America's liberator, Simon Bolivar. Not only does the book describe the intriguing, exciting and full life of Manuela in a way that will hold your attention and captivate you, but Kauffman weaves her story into the story of South America itself during this time of historical and social upheaval. As one who has traveled in South America, I was amazed at Kauffman's knowledge of geographic detail. He perfectly described the cities, the geographic features and the weather in each place he wrote about. This gave him credibility with me as someone who knew what he was writing about. By reading Manuela, I not only was entertained by a good story,I also learned a lot about this time in South American History. This story is full of drama, passion and history. The book gets better as one goes along. When it ends, you are sorry there is not more to read. I recommend this book to those who want to read the biography of a 21st century woman living in the 1800s of South America, or to those who want to read a stirring romance set in a time of war and upheaval, or to one interested in the history of South America (particularly, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador and Bolivia) or the story of Simon Bolivar. Gregory Kauffman has produced a fine work, well-reseached and magnificently told.
