October 16, 2000: I picked up this book out of my mother's basement...and began to read it out of curiosity for her mind. She was the director of the public health volunteers (mostly nurses) in Ecuador between '79 and '82. I'm no literary critic. I expected a boring read, done out of intellectual curiosity rather than for the sheer joy and pain of it. This book made me laugh out loud alone in my room and cry with hopeless sadness.... I read it in two nights, being a married man with young children and a dear wife who saw me stay up unreasonably late because I litarally could not put it down...I had a compulsion to read on! This book has relieved me of so many prejudices, and contributed immensely to my compassion for the poor people of Ecuador. Anyone reading this, might you know where I can get a version in spanish? I hope this book ciculates outside Peace Corps circles.

May 12, 2000: Yes? -- Then read this book. Although written in the 1960's, the feel this book gives for Peace Corps is better, more realistic, than anything else that I have ever read. If you think you want to join Peace Corps, if your child/parent/friend is talking about going, if you just want a solid understanding of what it's all about, this is the book to read.
