To skip, or not to skip?
The Templeton Report gives evidence for the advantages of academic acceleration, and endorses the Iowa Acceleration Scale approach.
An essential tool to guide decisions about whole-grade skip or other acceleration, the Iowa Acceleration Scale helps parents and teachers focus on objective data about the child, rather than subjective opinion. A study team, which includes the child's parents, goes through a series of questions that researchers have found to be important factors in successful acceleration. The questions have weighted responses that yield a score which then predicts (or recommends against) a grade skip or acceleration.
Feedback from years of nationwide use has resulted in a 2nd edition of this research-based, systematic, and objective guide for considering and implementing academic acceleration. Development and tested by the Belin-Blank Center at the University of Iowa, the IAS ensures that grade-skipping decisions are thoughtful, well reasoned, and defensible. The IAS is used successfully in all 50 states, Canada, and Australia.
