March 21, 2007: In a market where too often writers are forced into branding themselves, I love to read authors who deliberately challenge themselves by attempting completely original subjects and backdrops with each new piece. However, too often these are disappointments, because the ideas are not backed up by skill. This is very definitely not the case with Into the Yellow by Barbara Davies. The variety and range is stunning but the humour, the quality of the writing and the depth of the characters and research, does anything but disappoint. In fact, I can?t remember the last time a collection of short stories covered such a range, blurred the lines between historical, modern and fantastical, and still drew me in so smoothly with each piece. Impossible to categorise, imaginative writing of the first rank, it is simply great storytelling and I enthusiastically recommend Into the Yellow.
