Wells's lighthearted contemporary romance sometimes strains for humor, but eventually hits the mark. Sammi Matthews thinks her lack of confidence is what leads her to clumsily injure her dates, sabotaging any chance of a relationship. She hires life coach Luke Jones to talk up her self-esteem over the phone, but it's not Luke on the other line. His brother, Chase, an FBI special agent, is covering for Luke (who's hiding from the mob in a witness protection program) and thinks what Sammi needs is less coaching and more basic training. After a series of sometimes humorous shenanigans involving dogs, coffee and collisions with antique hubcaps, the supposedly logical Chase finds himself head over heels for Sammi. Secondary characters like an accordion-playing wannabe rapper help this implausible tale win over fans of romantic comedies. (June)

Sammi Matthews has had awful luck with men. After the bad breakup with her ex- eighteen months ago, Sammi has somehow injured every man that she's been interested in. A black eye, a broken rib, and a broken leg, it is no wonder that she's ready to see a life coach to get her love life in order. So, drawn to an ad in the newspaper, Sammi calls Luke for help.FBI Special Agent Chase Jones is Luke's older brother. He's also the reason that Luke has had to go into Witness Protection for a few months. To make up for the upheaval in his brother's life, Chase agrees to takeover some of Luke's clients. As he talks Sammi through her problems and trust issues, he's drawn to her. Against his common sense, Chase finds a way to see Sammi - then he falls for her and somehow it's never the right time to tell her that Luke and Chase are the same man.Review:How to Score read like a fun romantic comedy movie. As a leading man, Chase was very likable with his slightly obsessive drive for neatness and control, his difficult childhood and great looks. I can clearly see why Sammi would take it into her hands to get his attention. Sammi sounded like a wonderful fit for Chase as well with her warmth, generosity, and passion for life. May 13, 2009: For the safety of the Tulsa male population, museum curator Sammi Matthews knows she must stop dating; any man who goes out with her somehow gets injured due to her clumsiness. That is what has happened to her three victims. A desperate Sammi decides her lack of self-esteem when it comes to relationships has made her Ms Murphy's law. She seeks help so she hires life coach Luke Jones as an over the phone cheerleader building up her confidence.------------------
However, the FBI has the life coach in the witness protection program as he will soon testify against the mob. His brother Chase, an FBI agent, has filled in with Luke's clients, who are driving him crazy with their loser's attitude and self pity; he reaches the point of scorn that he fears for the future of the human race. That is until he meets Sammi. As Luke he coaches her; as Chase he dates her. He knows he owes her the truth, but fears her reaction as he pities himself ever since his L word mantra switched from logical to lovable.-----------------HOW TO SCORE is an amusing over the top of Black Mesa madcap romance filled with zany incidents and an eccentric cast including a former by the book FBI agent who finds love with Ms Klutz; if he can survive dating her. The story line is played totally for laughs so that secondary players have specific pigeon holed roles to enhance the comedy. Although readers should leave plausibly at the beginning, fans will relish this laugh out loud throwback to the 1930s screwball romantic comedies updated to twenty-first century Oklahoma.-----------Harriet Klausner
